Challenge

A national grocery retailer, committed to sustainability and energy performance transparency, was already leveraging submetering and monitoring tools as part of its broader efficiency strategy. While these efforts were effective, the organization sought to further reduce energy use and maintenance costs—particularly those tied to rooftop HVAC units and frequent failures of variable frequency drive (VFD) motors due to overheating. Any new solution needed to be intelligent, fault-resistant, and easily integrated into existing systems.

To address these needs, the retailer partnered with Titan Energy to implement the Turntide™ Smart Motor System. The project involved replacing aging, single-speed supply fan motors in rooftop units with high-efficiency Smart Motors featuring builtin controls and real-time system monitoring. A wireless network connection allowed for seamless integration with building automation systems, while energy meters established a baseline to track performance improvements over time. Impressed by
the results, the retailer expanded the initiative to additional locations, incorporating the solution as part of its long-term energy efficiency strategy.
