Justin Kearney Joins HBJ Energy Forum to Discuss Energy Affordability

Read the spotlight on Hartford Business Journal

As Connecticut businesses continue to navigate rising energy demand, evolving market conditions, and increasing pressure to control operating costs, energy affordability has become an increasingly important business issue.

Titan Energy's Managing Director Justin Kearney recently joined industry leaders at the Hartford Business Journal’s second annual Energy Forum at the Society Room in Hartford to discuss what businesses are actually paying for electricity and what can be done to help manage those costs.

During the panel, Justin brought more than two decades of experience in competitive energy markets to the conversation, highlighting the importance of affordability, market choice, and understanding the different components that make up a business’s energy costs.

Energy Costs Are a Business Cost Issue

For businesses, energy is more than another line item on a utility bill. It is an operating expense that can directly affect profitability, pricing and competitiveness.

That was evident throughout the discussion, as panelists examined the impact of electricity costs on businesses of different sizes and across different industries.

Justin emphasized the importance of looking at energy through a broader business lens. When companies face pressure to control costs, energy procurement, and management should be part of the conversation.

For manufacturers and other energy-intensive businesses in particular, even relatively small changes in energy costs can have a meaningful impact on the bottom line.

Competitive Markets Give Businesses Options

A key point Justin brought to the discussion was the value of competitive energy markets.

Connecticut's deregulated electricity market gives eligible businesses the ability to choose their electricity supplier rather than purchasing supply exclusively from their utility. That competition creates an opportunity for businesses to evaluate supply options, contract structures and pricing strategies based on their individual needs.

But simply having a competitive market isn't enough. Businesses need the expertise to understand the market, evaluate offers and determine when and how to secure supply.

That's where an experienced energy advisor can make a difference.

At Titan Energy, we help businesses navigate these markets and develop procurement strategies designed around their specific operational and financial objectives.

Supply Rates Have Remained Relatively Flat Over Two Decades

Justin also offered important perspective on the long-term energy market.

While businesses have experienced significant increases in their overall electricity bills over the years, electricity supply rates have remained relatively flat over the past 20 years when viewed over the long term.

That distinction matters.

A customer's total electric bill is made up of multiple components, including the cost of electricity supply as well as delivery charges, public policy programs and other utility-related costs. Changes in those non-supply components can have a significant effect on what businesses ultimately pay.

Understanding the difference between supply costs and delivery costs can therefore provide important context when evaluating today's energy prices and when planning for the future.

Helping Businesses Make More Informed Energy Decisions

The conversation at the Hartford Business Journal Energy Forum underscored a challenge businesses across Connecticut continue to face: how to keep energy costs manageable while operating in an increasingly complex energy environment.

From growing electricity demand to changes in energy infrastructure and evolving market conditions, businesses have more factors to consider than ever before.

Justin's participation in the forum reflects Titan Energy's commitment to bringing practical market knowledge and decades of experience to that conversation.

As an independent energy management consultancy, Titan Energy works with commercial, industrial and municipal customers to help them understand their energy costs, navigate competitive markets and make informed decisions about their energy strategy.

Energy affordability starts with understanding what you're paying for and having the right strategy to manage it.
