EIA: U.S. Electricity Generation From Renewables Surpasses Coal

In April 2019, U.S. electricity generation from renewables exceeded coal for the first time. The growth comes from seasonal factors as well as record-setting wind generation and near-record solar generation.

Energy consumption and demand tends to be lower in the spring and fall when compared to the summer and winter months. As a result, generation from fuel sources decreased in April while renewable generation like hydroelectric was at a high. High springtime hydroelectric generation is a result of snow melting, which increases water supply.
